Holly Butler, a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Strathclyde, was awarded the Converge Challenge 2017 runner-up prize for ClinSpec Dx – a simple blood test that can detect brain tumours rapidly, allowing early diagnosis.

The company have developed methods for rapid spectroscopic analysis of blood serum, allowing same day detection of a range of diseases, with first applications to brain cancer.

ClinSpec Dx first applied to Converge in 2016 and were shortlisted as part of the Top 30. Holly led the project through the competition the following year and was crowned the 60-second pitch winner at our Elevator Pitch event in June, before accepting the runner-up prize at the Awards Dinner in September 2017.

"Converge has provided ClinSpec Dx with clear guidance on how to bring our technology from the lab to the customer, and has truly helped develop us into an investor ready business. From a personal viewpoint, moving into the commercial side of technology and  innovation has been hugely beneficial learning curve, and meeting other entrepreneurs from a range of backgrounds was fantastic."

Following on from their win, Holly was interviewed on BBC Scotland alongside Converge Challenge Director, Olga Kozlova and was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2017 at the first ever Scottish Women’s Awards.

The company will pitch for investment at EIE18  – Scotland’s premier tech investor showcase. Their technology will be entering the clinic from January 2018, providing real life results from suspected brain tumour patients.
