Rebecca Pick

University of Strathclyde

Rebecca Pick from the University of Strathclyde is a double Converge winner! After taking home the KickStart runner-up prize in 2014, she came back with a further developed proposition in 2015 to secure 3rd place and the title of first ever undergraduate Converge Challenge winner!

Rebecca began her journey in 2013 as an intern for the Scottish Institute for Enterprise (SIE), while also taking part in the University of Strathclyde Enterprise Pathway Programme (SEN).

Pick Protection’s first product is the Personal Guardian, a personal and lone worker alarm devised after a woman was attacked in Rebecca’s apartment block. The wearable device provides a Level 1 Police response to the user’s location and gathers evidence to assist in gaining a conviction.

After refining her business idea, Rebecca applied to SIE’s Young Innovators Challenge, Converge Challenge and Strathclyde’s Rising Star Programme.

“Not only did the training help me focus my business plan, it allowed me to pitch to a room full of people that lead to further opportunities. Converge gave me the ‘fire in my belly’ I needed for the final investor pitch. Taking part was an incredible experience!”

Over the past year, Rebecca has secured an £800,000 investment! Having initially attracted £60,000 from angel syndicate, Gabriel Investments, she was then awarded a Scottish EDGE Young EDGE prize, before securing a further £744,000 investment led by Equity Gap in October 2016.

In 2017, Pick Protection officially launched their first product, partnered with Unipart Security, whose alarm receiving centre will monitor their alarm devices, and expanded their team. Rebecca also won Investing Women’s AccelerateHER Growth award which enabled her to travel to California and meet with potential US investors.
