Corien Staels was completing a Master's degree at the University of Glasgow when she founded Staels Design Ltd – a company that aims to meet the unmet needs in rehabilitation product design.
Their first product 'wheelAIR' is a battery powered airflow back-rest cushion designed to be more supportive, increasing comfort while keeping you cool and fits all active lightweight wheelchairs.
Corien first entered Converge Challenge in 2016 and reached the Top 30, returning the following year to scoop the Design & Creativity Award for her pioneering healthcare product.
"Winning the Design and Creativity Award means a lot to me not only because of the amazing price money, but also because it is the first price to give actual recognition to the wheelAIR design. Converge widened my network both personally as professionally, and I can only recommend participating."
2017 was a milestone year for Staels Design Ltd. They signed their first brand ambassador, double Paralympian and World Champion Michael Kerr, closed a £100k seed round of investment, secured £100k from Scottish EDGE and made their first sales. Corien was also named Entrepreneur of the Year at the University of Glasgow Knowledge Exchange and Engagement Conference.
Corien says, "2018 will mark the year that Staels Design's wheelAIR further hits the market both nationally and internationally, this year is all about sales and growth."
